ABOUT this project

Who: The University of Manitoba is running this study at 3 different sites.

1. Winnipeg, Manitoba

2. Hamilton, Ontario

3. Calgary, Alberta

What: This is a Randomized Control Trial looking at the benefits of mental and physical health in teens who may be at risk for type 2 diabetes.

When: The Winnipeg and Hamilton sites are recruiting for a September 2025 start date. Calgary start date is TBD.

Why: We want to discover the best way to help teens and their families lead a healthy lifestyle.

What we measure: You will be asked to complete questionnaires about your physical activity level, sleep habits, mental health, and nutrition. You will also wear a fitbit in order to collect data on physical activity and sleep, and you will get a DXA scan to measure body composition.

Commitment: It is a 16 week intervention with in person sessions (90 minutes each) 2x per week. â€‹

You could have the opportunity to work with a team of psychologists, kinesiologists and dieticians to work collaboratively to help improve your overall health and wellness.

We believe there are many factors, that may be different for each person, that can contribute to challenges in maintaining a healthy body weight. We want to see if addressing some of these factors through a therapy known as dialectical behavior therapy will help improve behavior change.

Check out our resources page if you want to learn more about dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

Below is our theoretical framework, basically a visual representation of the study. It illustrates what we think some of the root causes of obesity are, the possible treatment options that we will provide in this study, and the results that we predict will occur.
